International Secondary Diplomas: IB and Cambridge IGCSE & A-Levels – What Nigerian Students Should Know

Some Nigerian students and parents seek international secondary school qualifications. Two programmes stand out: the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and the Cambridge IGCSE and A-Levels. These are globally recognized and often used for university admissions abroad or into elite universities in Nigeria.

IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a rigorous two-year curriculum for students aged 16 to 19. It requires study in six subject groups: language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, and the arts. Cambridge International A-Levels follow IGCSE. They are taken at age 16 to 19. Students usually choose 3 to 4 subjects. A-Levels are highly regarded by universities for their depth. They are graded A* to E. Good A-Level grades often earn university credit or advanced standing. The combination of IGCSE and A-Levels is accepted by universities in the UK, US, Canada, and many Nigerian universities through direct entry or as a strong admission credential.
