ANAN Qualifying Exams: How to Become a Certified National Accountant (CNA)

The Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) is another statutory body for accountants in Nigeria. Its qualification leads to the Certified National Accountant (CNA) designation. The path is different from ICAN’s, but both are respected. ANAN focuses heavily on public sector and government accounting.

The ANAN programme begins with the Postgraduate Professional Course at the Nigerian College of Accountancy in Jos. This is a mandatory residential programme lasting several months. During the programme, students are taught advanced financial accounting, public sector accounting, auditing, tax, and management. Lectures run from morning to evening. The intensity is high.

At the end of the residential programme, students sit for the ANAN Qualifying Examination. It consists of written papers and an oral interview. The written exam tests theory and practical problem-solving. The oral interview assesses communication skills and professional ethics. Admission into the programme requires a degree or HND in accounting or a related field. You apply through the ANAN website and pay the required fees. Accommodation on the Jos campus is provided. The programme is demanding, but the pass rate is reasonable if you attend lectures, complete assignments, and study diligently.

Once you pass, you are inducted as a Certified National Accountant. You can use the CNA designation after your name. ANAN members are qualified for senior accounting roles in all sectors, especially in public service. Membership must be renewed annually with continuing professional development credits.
