ARCON Professional Practice Examination (PPE) for Architects

The Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) regulates the architectural profession. To become a fully registered architect, you must pass the Professional Practice Examination (PPE). This is after completing your B.Sc and M.Sc in architecture, or an equivalent qualification, and completing a period of practical training.

The PPE is a written examination. It tests your knowledge of architectural practice, building regulations, contract administration, professional ethics, and Nigerian building codes. There is also a design studio component where you solve a small design problem under exam conditions. The exam is held once or twice a year.

Eligibility requires that you have completed a minimum of two years of practical experience under a registered architect. You must document this experience in a logbook, which is submitted with your application. The application is made through the ARCON portal. You will also need references from registered architects who can attest to your competence.

To prepare, study the ARCON Conditions of Engagement and Scale of Fees, the National Building Code, and standard textbooks on professional practice. Review your own project experience. The questions are practical. They test what you should have learned on the job. Revise construction detailing, materials, and contract law basics.

Passing the PPE allows you to become a full member of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) and a registered architect with ARCON. You can then use the title “Arc.” before your name and sign architectural drawings. The license must be renewed periodically. ARCON takes professional discipline seriously.
