COREN Professional Interview and Examination: A Guide for Engineers and Technicians

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) regulates the engineering profession. After completing your degree or HND and undergoing practical training, you must pass the COREN Professional Interview or Examination to become a registered engineer, technologist, or technician.

There are three categories of registration: Engineer (R.Eng or COREN registered), Engineering Technologist, and Engineering Technician. Each has a different entry path. For engineers, you need a B.Eng or equivalent, plus at least four years of post-graduation experience, including a period of supervised training. For technologists, you need an HND and relevant experience. Technicians need a National Diploma or equivalent.

The process starts with the submission of a detailed report of your training and experience. This report is assessed by COREN. If accepted, you are invited for a professional interview. During the interview, a panel asks questions about your report, your projects, and your general engineering knowledge. You must demonstrate competence, ethics, and continuous learning. Preparation for the interview is not about cramming. It is about reflecting on your own work. Know your projects inside out. Be ready to explain the principles applied, the challenges faced, and the solutions you provided. Revise engineering ethics and the COREN code of conduct. Present yourself professionally. The interview usually lasts about 45 minutes. Passing this stage earns you full COREN registration. Your name is entered in the COREN register. You receive a certificate and a stamp. Without COREN registration, you cannot sign off on engineering designs or supervise major projects in Nigeria. It is your license to practice.
