BECE (Basic Education Certificate Examination): How It Works and How to Prepare

The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is taken at the end of Junior Secondary School (JSS 3). It qualifies a student for promotion into Senior Secondary School. Two bodies conduct this exam: NECO administers the national BECE, while State Ministries of Education handle the state version.

The BECE covers all subjects studied in JSS 1 to JSS 3. These include English, Mathematics, Basic Science, Basic Technology, Social Studies, Business Studies, a Nigerian language, and Religious Studies. Some states add French or Computer Studies. The grading system is similar to the O-Level system, with A to F grades.

Registration is usually handled by schools. Students are required to provide their continuous assessment scores from JSS 1 to JSS 3. These scores form part of the final result. So it is not just the exam that matters. Every term’s performance counts.

To prepare well, students should revise their notes from all three years. Use BECE past questions to understand the question pattern. Do not cram. Understand the concepts. Practical subjects like Basic Science and Basic Technology have a practical component. Schools are expected to conduct hands-on sessions before the exam.

The BECE result is released a few weeks after the exam. Students who pass all subjects proceed to SSS 1. Those who do not meet the requirements may need to repeat or take supplementary exams. So take it seriously. It sets the foundation for WAEC and beyond.
