GCE (General Certificate of Education): How Private Candidates Can Upgrade Their O-Level Results

The GCE is not a separate exam board. It is a term used for the private candidate versions of WAEC and NECO SSCE. It is designed for individuals who want to sit for O-Level subjects outside the regular school system. Many Nigerians use the GCE to make up for deficiencies in their WAEC or NECO results.

WAEC GCE registration opens around June for the November/December series. NECO GCE external registration also opens mid-year for the November/December exams. Both are purely for private candidates. The registration is done online through the respective portals. You must create a profile, upload your passport and biometric data, and select your subjects and exam town.

You can combine GCE results from different sittings to meet university admission requirements. For example, if you had a D7 in Mathematics in your school WAEC but later scored C5 in WAEC GCE, you can use the GCE result for that subject. Universities accept combined results as long as they are from the same exam body (WAEC with WAEC, NECO with NECO).

Preparation for the GCE is self-driven. You are not under a school timetable. So discipline is critical. Create a daily study plan. Use the official syllabus and past questions. Join a study group if possible. Practice with Highscore EdTech’s CBT simulator to test your readiness under timed conditions.

The results are released online. Print your slip and keep the original certificate. The GCE certificate carries the same weight as the school version. Do not let anyone tell you it is inferior. It is not.
