JUPEB vs IJMB: Which A-Level Programme Should You Choose for Direct Entry?

If you want to gain university admission through direct entry into 200 level, you need an A-Level qualification. The two most popular options in Nigeria are JUPEB (Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board) and IJMB (Interim Joint Matriculation Board). Both are nine-month programmes. Both are accepted by many Nigerian universities. But they differ in important ways.

JUPEB is coordinated by a consortium of universities led by the University of Lagos. It is run in JUPEB-affiliated centres across the country. At the end of the programme, you sit for the JUPEB exam. Your score is converted to points. A high point score (12 points and above) gives you a strong chance of admission into 200 level in any participating university. JUPEB results are accepted in over 70 percent of Nigerian universities, including federal, state, and private institutions.

IJMB is administered by Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The structure is similar. You study three subjects relevant to your intended course. You write the IJMB exam after nine months. The grades are A, B, C, D, E, and F. Most universities require a minimum of grade C in each subject for direct entry. IJMB is widely accepted in Northern Nigerian universities and is gaining ground in the South.

The key difference is the grading system and the range of accepting institutions. JUPEB uses a point system and has broader acceptance. IJMB is older and sometimes cheaper. Both require discipline. The programme is intense. You will cover a full A-Level syllabus in less than a year. Pick a centre with a proven track record. Ask for their past results before you pay.
